TiE Young Entrepreneurs (TYE) Competitions

TiE Young Entrepreneurs (TYE) Oregon is a TiE Oregon initiative to inspire, challenge and empower students to become the next generation of entrepreneurs, business and community leaders. The program is run in 23 cities around the world. Seasoned entrepreneurs and mentors, teach high school students a project-based curriculum that has a strong emphasis on design thinking and customer validation. The program will run from October 2018 through Spring 2019 culminating in a State Competition. The winning team will continue on and participate in the Global TYE Competition in Boston, MA June 20 – 22, 2019.

Locally, this year’s program will consist of a Central Program which is open to all high school students in the Portland Metro area and four Satellite Programs that will take place at Benson Polytechnic High School, Reynolds High School and Rosemary Anderson High School’s East and New Columbia Campuses.

PROGRAM INFORMATION:

The complete program is divided into two Phases.  All new students must go through Phase 1 in order to participate in Phase 2. You can repeat Phase 2 as often as you’d like. Returning students can also participate as a Student Mentor or Team Manager.

Phase 1 –

Instructors lead workshops on a variety of subjects and concepts that are intended to introduce new students to the world of entrepreneurship. The knowledge gained here will serve as the foundation for which Phase 2 will be built upon.

Phase 1 Workshop Topics:
  • – Bugs & Passion Lists
  • – Customer Empathy & Design Thinking
  • – Lean Canvas
  • – Skills & Teams
  • – Startup Math
  • – Rapid Prototyping
  • – Presentation & Pitching Skills

Phase 1 content is delivered in a boot camp fashion taking place in one weekend. The teams formed here will work together throughout Phase 2.

Phase 2 –

During these sessions, the teams will formalize their business concepts, validate their products and/or services and create a prototype with help from experienced mentors. They will also work on putting together presentations that describe their concepts in great detail.

  • – Design Thinking & Product Market Fit
  • – Customer Interviews/Validation
  • – Minimal Viable Product (MVP) & Product Development
  • – Business & Financial Model
  • – Tying it all together & Storytelling
  • – Presentation Practice

 

Phase 2 ends with the State Competition and the winner will advance to the Global Competition. The State Competition will be held on Sunday, April 28, 2019 from 1:00 PM – 5:30 PM at Mercy Corps, Portland.

The team that advances to the Global Competition will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to the TYE Global Competition in Spring 2019.

Students that participate throughout the program and attend all the sessions will be offered a summer internship with some of the hottest Oregon startups.
